GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

Also called: AI Search Optimization, AI SEO

Generative Engine Optimization is the AI-era cousin of SEO. When someone asks ChatGPT "who should I call for a burst pipe in Wauwatosa," the tool does not return ten links, it names a couple of businesses. GEO is the work of being one of the names it picks.

It overlaps with SEO, fast, well-structured, genuinely useful pages help both, but it weights things classic SEO undervalues: content an AI can extract cleanly, clear named-entity information about who and where you are, third-party mentions on the list-style pages AI engines lean on, and recency.

For a new business, GEO is the asymmetric opportunity. AI engines do not weight decades-old domain authority the way the Map Pack does, so a well-structured newcomer can get cited far faster than it could climb traditional rankings.

A plain example

Ask ChatGPT for the best web designer near Wauwatosa. If it names two or three studios, those studios are winning at GEO, whether or not they rank first on Google.

Why this glossary exists. Most agencies use these terms to sound technical and keep you dependent. We define them plainly because an owner who understands the work makes better decisions, and asks sharper questions on the call. Ask one directly.
